Beauty is a radiance that originates from within

The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.  There couldn’t be a truer statement when describing two of the most influential women in Jane Seymour’s life – her mother, Mieke, and daughter, Katie Flynn.  Inspired by her mother Mieke’s story of survival through caring for other prisoners in a Japanese internment camp in World War II, Jane Seymour was empowered to channel her own personal life challenges and adversity into an opportunity to help others when she founded the Open Hearts Foundation in 2010.

The Foundation’s mission of providing expertise, resources and tools to enable emerging nonprofits raise their profile and further their mission is now being stewarded by Seymour’s daughter, Katie Flynn, and her close friends through the launch of the Young Hearts.  Each year, the Open Hearts Foundation has recognized emerging nonprofits and philanthropists, and at this year’s Inaugural Young Hearts Spring Luncheon, Young Hearts has continued the tradition.

Jane Seymour graciously hosted the luncheon at her stunning home in Malibu to celebrate the Young Hearts inaugural event.  It was a picture-perfect spring day.  Guests mingled over wine and conversation, while scoping out the silent auction and posing for photos with friends.  The front courtyard hosted an intimate shopping experience from vendors such as Zadig & Voltaire, Persolé, Lukka, and Kendra Scott Jewelry.  I scooped up a cuddly stuffed sloth from Slumberkins for Luka, who has recently developed an obsession for sloths (boys!), and an adorable pair of Dig a Pony Kids bloomers for Kosi.  It always feels extra good when you know all proceeds are going to a good cause ;)

Next, guests were led to the picturesque back lawn, which overlooked the massive, crystal blue Pacific Ocean.  While enjoying our farm-to-table lunch consisting of grilled summer squash, slow roasted salmon and other deliciousness prepared by LA Chef Ella Freyinger, we were entertained with performances by Keith Harkin, Irish singer and songwriter, and Jennifer Paskow, award-winning children's music artist.

Presenters Jordana Brewster and Ali Fedotowsky (pregnant and glowing!) took to the podium to introduce this year’s emerging nonprofits.  First recognized was Sarah Herron, founder of SheLift, a 501 (c)3 organization that empowers girls with physical differences to improve self-acceptance and confidence through outdoor adventures and body-positive mentorship.  Sarah gained her notoriety on ABC’s The Bachelor for being the first contestant with a physical disability.  Having been born with Amniotic Band Syndrome, Sarah’s disability never stopped her from being the outdoor adventurist she is.  She launched SheLift when she recognized the support, admiration and passion her viewers showed – she knew she could create a platform to help so many others.  I had the pleasure of getting to meet and chat with Sarah personally at the event, and I can truly say she is as beautiful on the inside as she is on the out.

The second honorees were Yasmine Delawari Johnson and Jules Leyser, Co-Founders of the Alliance of Moms, a new generation of philanthropists whose mission is to break the intergenerational cycle of babies born to teens in foster care.  This is done through offering educational programs and practical tools to young moms in the foster care system to empower them to give their babies a healthier childhood than their own.  What a group of powerhouse women!

Needless to say, I was so energized to be surrounded by so many of these incredible women with a mission to better this world.  Congratulations to this year’s honorees, and to the launch of Young Hearts.  I can’t wait to see all of the wonderful ways Young Hearts will continue upon the mission of the Open Hearts Foundation in supporting the next generation of philanthropists!
