Baby2Baby: Turning Basic Necessities into Lifetime Opportunities

- Kristiana Tarnuzzer

IT BEGAN…

…with two moms and a simple desire to do more for children in need.  Since assuming the leadership roles at Baby2Baby in 2011, Kelly Sawyer Patricof and Norah Weinstein have led Baby2Baby through a complete transformation from a grassroots, community-run organization into a nationally recognized children's non-profit that serves hundreds of thousands of children living in poverty across the country every year.

Baby2Baby is a non-profit that provides children living in poverty, ages 0-12 years, with diapers, clothing and all the basic necessities that every child deserves. In the last 7 years, they have distributed over 50 million items to children in homeless shelters, domestic violence programs, foster care, hospitals and underserved schools as well as to children across the country who have lost everything in the wake of disasters.  They also serve as the leader of the Baby2Baby National Network with member organizations in over 25 cities who distribute basic essentials to children living in poverty.

DIAPERS…

…might seem like a staple in many of our baby’s nurseries, but the reality is that 1 in 3 families in this country struggle to buy diapers for their children.  Even more unbelievable may be the fact that diapers are not only NOT considered a “necessity” and, therefore, are NOT covered by Food Stamps, but in California, they are instead, considered a “luxury”…and are taxed as such.  How does this go way deeper?  Most daycares require (not request) your child be dropped off each day with a full day’s worth of diapers -- meaning many parents in low-income families who cannot afford diapers must opt to stay at home versus work to earn an income…thus, continuing the cycle of poverty.

Baby2Baby’s distribution model works like this…

+ Donations are dropped off at Baby2Baby throughout the year

+ Each donation is inspected with the greatest of care to ensure that all clothing is free of stains and holes, toys are clean and ready to use and every item is something you would give to a child you love.  This is Baby2Baby’s “Golden Standard.”

+ Volunteers organize the items and onto shelves (Hi!  That’s me organizing the other week here in LA!)

+ Items are picked up by social workers and distributed to children in homeless shelters, foster care, hospitals and underserved schools
